Check Out the Best Flooring Options for People Who Suffer from Allergies and Asthma

If you or a family member suffer from allergies or asthma, there are many things in your daily life that you must do to keep your family safe. One of the things to think about is the type of flooring you have in your home – is it helping or hurting your condition? Read on to learn about some of the flooring options and discover if tile flooring is a good or bad choice for those with allergies.

Tile is the Best Choice for People Suffering from Allergies and Asthma

Any person who suffers from allergies or asthma would be well advised to choose tile flooring if possible. Tile is hard, flat and easy to clean. From ceramic to porcelain, tile is made from non-porous, non-allergen materials. Additionally, many of the debris that causes allergic reactions, such as pet hair, dust mites, and pollen, are not able to penetrate the texture of the tile.

Consider as well that ceramic and porcelain tiles are very water-resistant. This means they are great choices for bathrooms and kitchens, both of which often have steam and water threatening to cause mold or mildew. This is not a problem with most tiles. However, some types of tile, such as natural stone, are more porous and not the best option for those suffering from allergies or asthma.

Hardwood Flooring is a Good Option

Though not as easy to keep clean as tile, hardwood floors are a good option too. Studies have shown that hardwood generally has minimal contamination from things like animal dander, dust, and mold. This improves indoor air quality throughout. However, it only works well in areas that do not get a lot of moisture, such as bedrooms and hallways. It is not a good choice for bathrooms or kitchens.

Cork and Bamboo Can Be Good Options in Some Situations

There are many advantages to cork and bamboo, including the fact that they are allergy-friendly and that they grow and regenerate very fast – which means they are both eco-friendly and sustainable. Unfortunately, they are also more susceptible than other options to dents and water damage. As a result, they are not the best choice for bathrooms, kitchens, or high-traffic areas.
