Answer the Three Key Questions
There are three questions that must be answered before you start your project:
- What’s your budget?
- What’s your timeframe?
- Which areas of the home are you going to renovate?
Until you have answered these three questions, you cannot get started.
Consider All Potential Updates
When renovating a space, it is common for homeowners to think only of taking out one thing, such as a bathtub, and replace it with a newer version of the same thing, such as a newer bathtub. This is not the most efficient way to go about planning for a renovation. Instead, think about the room as though it is empty and has nothing installed.
What would you install there? Would you replace your bathtub with a walk-in shower? Would you replace the carpeting in your living room with unique tile? You might not be able to make all the changes you want, but knowing what the area would look like in a perfect world can be a great help in determining what to cover in your renovation.
Consider What You’ll Do During the Renovation
Many of the steps involved in starting and completing a renovation are related to choosing the right products, materials, and contractors, but there are other more practical concerns, too. For example, if you are updating your kitchen, what will you do while it is out of order? What if you are updating your only bathroom?
One potential solution to these issues is to plan all or most of your renovation while you are out of town or otherwise on vacation. If this is possible to do, then all the work could be done while you are out of the house and without inconvenience.
Understand the Timing of Supplies
Before you get started, take the time to determine all the suppliers you will use and get quotes not just on price but on timing, too. For example, if you are having a custom couch created, it could take up to six months for it to be completed. Try to arrange all orders so that you can have everything completed at once.
